Portraiture: What makes a good Portrait?

What makes a good portrait?
I do have specific ideas of what a good portrait may consist of, but I am often amazed at the portraits I come across that do not abide by any of these “rules.” Many of these images are truly spectacular. And it further reminds me that good art is made up of many things, and this question can almost never really be answered, at least not with any certainty.
A good portrait can reveal secrets about the person: his/her character.
How to capture the personality? It is always a new adventure for me to get connected with another… to capture another soul… to capture another spirit…

Thanks to Cheryl for organizing an amazing party filled with fun games and delicious treats. It was a blast! The “poopy diaper game” was especially entertaining!

I met Cheryl and her daughter Keela at Jude’s Surprise Baby Shower yesterday. Couldn’t resist taking their portrait together to capture their very special relationship.
